Our targets set for 2025 will allow us to be deemed Carbon Neutral. Following a path to achieve 50 percent reduction in total emissions by 2030 and then become Net Zero by 2050. Our targets are in line with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

(*For internal purposes* Carbon Neutral is a term used to describe the scope 1 and scope 2 carbon emissions caused by an entity have been balanced out by funding an equivalent amount of carbon savings elsewhere in the world (carbon offsets)

In 2021, Oracle joined the Exponential Roadmap initiative declaring our commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. As previously stated, we have set a target to reduce our emissions by 50% by 2030 to ensure progress towards Net Zero. It will take a village to achieve these targets and cross departmental collaboration is key in order to make our ambitions a reality.

Taking a data-driven approach to improving sustainability performance

Some additional data points on our performance thus far include:

In 16 regions, our Oracle Cloud data centers use the equivalent of 100% renewable energy. Our goal is to have all of Oracle Cloud powered by 100% renewable energy by 2025. Several of our datacenters are ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certified. (More info on ISO standards here: https://www.iso.org/iso-14001-environmental-management.html) As Oracle continues to grow, so does the demand for energy. We have ensured that the growth is powered with renewable sources and in 2021 Oracle increased renewable energy usage by 22%. In addition, a percentage of owned building locations are BOMA, LEED, and Energy Star certified. Beyond its inherent business benefits, Oracle Cloud offers a more sustainable alternative for companies looking to minimize their environmental impact. With Oracle Cloud’s sharing of computing resources among a large number of customers, organizations gain enormous economies of scale, especially when it comes to carbon and energy consumption. Oracle Cloud enables customers to take advantage of Oracle’s highly efficient cloud infrastructure with its centralized server processing and optimized energy usage.

Oracle’s data centers leverage state-of-the-art intelligent energy management and cooling technologies that are based on Oracle’s industry-leading expertise and best practices.

As stated earlier, 100% renewable energy is used in 16 regions.

Oracle works closely with its colocation partners to improve data transparency and drive renewable energy adoption. These considerations are part of our selection process for new vendors, and they also factor into our engagements with existing vendors.

Oracle also manages an elastic computing platform that can grow dynamically with an organization as needed, eliminating excess capacity builds for future demand.

Furthermore, Oracle reduces environmental waste by maximizing the reuse and recycling of its hardware, further aligning with the circular economy. A key tenet of the circular economy is that physical assets should be decoupled from the service they provide. Individuals or organizations do not necessarily need to physically own computing hardware, they just need access to the ability to compute. This is exactly what the Cloud delivers.

In the last century we have made immense strides forward as a global community while also seeing incredibly rapid population growth. Literally billions of people have been pulled out of poverty and we are able to address healthcare issues more effectively than ever.

However, this immense growth in the middle class has led to unprecedented pressures on the natural resources on which we depend, both to feed the planet as well as to provide the goods that we have all become accustomed to -- like mobile phones, cars, homes, etc.

Increasing globalization has also grown the complexity of our supply chains, making it more difficult to understand the impacts that may reach halfway around the world.

Digitization has also accelerated the pace of production and delivery, while in some cases creating a societal divide driven by access to technology.

All the while we are seeing the impacts of climate change with greater impact and frequency.

As a result, there have been increasing expectations for corporations to be more transparent in how they operate and how they are adversely impacting sustainable development and to show their commitment to addressing these challenges. 12

In a global survey of over 11,000 business leaders and consumers across 15 countries, 91% of respondents want to see more accountability from businesses when it comes to making progress on sustainability and social efforts.

The events of the COVID-19 pandemic have put a spotlight on sustainability and social efforts with people worldwide demanding change and turning to businesses and technology to make more progress and become more transparent. While businesses have put more of an emphasis on these issues in light of the public outcry, it’s typically been from more of an aspirational standpoint versus an operational standpoint. As a result, many businesses are not able to show material progress when it comes to tackling these issues.

Given that sustainability can often include an enormous scope of impacts and activities, it is critical to determine which are the most material to the business.

Once identified the critical next step is to be proactive in assessing where you currently stand, where you want to be in the future, and how technology can help you get there. No one wants to see big variances between forecasts and actual results. And in rapidly changing business conditions, such as those we’ve seen over the past few years, forecasts can quickly become outdated. Continuous forecasting is quickly becoming a necessity.

Intelligent performance management in Oracle Cloud ERP introduces machine-driven forecasting, where the machine generates the forecast and then brings in human judgment to augment it. By applying machine learning to predictive planning and forecasting, you can bring in more data, such as energy, waste, and water data, and seed forecasts with predictions to speed updates. You also gain the ability to capture the data needed to calculate emissions.

With built in analytics, ERP provides the ability to capture energy usage from invoices by supplier on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

With Oracle, you have more objective forecasts. You can reveal hidden bias in forecasts submitted by planners, uncover significant deviation in forecasts compared to prediction for the future, and speed up your overall forecasting and response.

An example of the environmental and financial benefits of Oracle Cloud is a case study conducted for a railway company who migrated to OCI for their previous on premise Oracle ERP.

A third party verified the customers greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage prior to the migration and after. The results are staggering.

After verifying the results, the customer reaped the benefits of a 62% reduction in electricity consumption and a 93% decrease in Green house gas emissions.

New technologies allow for fit-for-purpose solutions. Deploying drones and autonomous technology to identify and remove pollution in public waterways. Technology as a tool kit for possibilities

Project CityShark cleans up Waterways Both the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Utilities and San Francisco Estuary Institute are taking a leading technology approach to address water pollution. This is made possible by using Kinetica’s streaming data warehouse and OCI HPC.

By running machine learning algorithms using the OCI High Performance Computing (HPC) platform’s parallel processing capability, the drone-captured images are instantly processed and analyzed to provide insights into how much waste is taking over the water source.

The WasteShark (pictured above) can then navigate to the polluted areas to filter and collect debris. Doing such a task using on-premises servers wasn’t possible if they were to report on the findings quickly and efficiently.

Cole’s MSAC Solutions was engaged to develop a plan enabling Coles to collect accurate data and allow reporting on packaging recyclability. The engagement leveraged MSAC’s experience across similar retail projects involving supply chain engagement, the PREP tool and the Oracle Retail Brand Compliance system.

The approach needed to be flexible enough to consider all the specific requirements of each business category whilst ensuring that all packaging data was accurately captured, up to date and fully auditable.

A combination of approaches was used. A technical team engaged directly with the supply chain to gather and verify the packaging information before processing it through the PREP tool. Combined with a packaging data capture configuration improvement in the Oracle Retail Brand Compliance system, this enabled Coles to access full reporting and auditing capabilities.

FLSmidth supplies the mining and cement industries globally with everything from engineering, machines, and complete processing plants to maintenance, support services, and operation of processing facilities. The company has revenues of about €2.5 billion annually, with 11,000 employees working in seven regions.

FLSmidth opted to move all its workloads to OCI because, as a longtime user of Oracle for critical systems, the company wanted all the benefits of a cloud computing network that offers global reach, scalability, and cost savings. Above all, FLSmidth was convinced that Oracle’s familiarity with the company’s procedures and infrastructure would make it a great partner to guide the manufacturer’s massive shift to OCI without any business disruption. The company also selected Oracle Cloud Infrastructure for the advantages of a cloud subscription model, rather than on-premises licensing. FLSmidth would save costs by shutting down many of its own data centers around the world. An additional driving factor in choosing Oracle was support for FLSmidth’s zero-emissions sustainability program. The company could reduce its IT-related carbon footprint by using Oracle’s Elastic Cloud consumption-based pricing model, enabling the company to control resources with cost-cutting discipline.

In the first year, FLSmidth tripled performance across its IT infrastructure and saw a fivefold reduction in time elapsed for job loading into its data warehouses. Everyone in Great Britain gets power when they need it. The company is working to lower the nation’s carbon emissions, with the goal of being able by 2025 to operate without any carbon-based energy for at least some of the time. Doing so will require using much more renewable energy from sources such as wind and solar, the volume of which is difficult to predict because those sources depend on weather conditions.

National Grid ESO chose Oracle Cloud Infrastructure because it could deliver NVIDIA GPU-based computing power that’s optimal for machine learning workloads, with cores that can run at up to 125 TFLOPS. Additionally, even at max power, the cores expend approximately 300 watts of energy, a fraction of what a modern stovetop requires. Oracle’s UK data center provides ready access to cloud capabilities as well.

National Grid ESO is seeing up to 40% performance improvements for models running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. When the team ran its first machine-learning model on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, it was about 40% more accurate than the previous model in production at that time. The team expected the workload to take a few hours to run, but instead it ran in minutes. 43

After launching electric-car-sharing service GreenGo in Budapest several years ago, Managing Partner Bálint Michaletzky learned the hard way that the app-based company's on-premise IT system couldn't keep up with customer demand or its ambitious plans.

GreenGo turned to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure's on-demand, scalable compute and storage capacity. Upgraded processing power and redundant resources have helped the company eliminate system outages and prepare for geographic expansion.

For instance, scaling up its on-premise server-based system might take two to four weeks. After implementing Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, it took GreenGo only an hour to switch processing from its main, two-CPU cloud server in Frankfurt to a backup, four-CPU cloud server in London. Now GreenGo has four-CPU cloud servers in both locations.

Each year, the world’s largest mining operations evaluate many potential efficiency solutions. Only a few get chosen. MineSense has succeeded, and earned awards as a leader in clean tech, by showing mining companies how they’ll quickly get value.

Oracle Autonomous Database, which runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, is at the center of this success.

MineSense places rugged x-ray devices on massive power shovels at the mine face. These grade the ore in every bucket to optimize the downstream use of power and water to extract the ore while minimizing the waste generated.

MineSense’s small IT team used Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse to lower DBA workloads by 65% while still providing large numbers of users, such as mining engineers, geophysicists, and data scientists, a high-performance database platform to analyze the IoT data.

That same autonomous database features Oracle Application Express, a low code development and deployment capability that lets the MineSense team build and deliver apps in one week instead of six weeks.

The New Zealand-based milk producer combines expert and sustainable farming practices with state-of-the-art manufacturing processes to create a range of nutritional milk products that provide genuine benefits for human health and well-being. Its purpose, “Doing Milk Differently For A Healthier World,” is driven by being different, by providing essential nutrition, and by operating sustainably.

Synlait’s HR team needed to take a holistic view of diversity, realigning the organization to do the right thing. Oracle Fusion HCM Analytics provided the data and visualizations needed to address gender inequality in compensation, recruitment, and promotions. Oracle Fusion HCM Analytics is part of the Oracle Fusion Analytics Warehouse portfolio of analytical applications for Oracle Cloud applications.

Oracle Cloud HCM gave Synlait the administrative ability to deliver self-service to all employees. It also provided the data and information that Synlait can turn into the strategic advice that its business leaders needed to make decisions going forward. When Pristine Seas began its mission to create marine reserves free of commercial fishing, only 1% of the oceans were protected. Today, it’s 7%, though only 2.5% is fully protected from damaging activities. The project has helped create 22 marine reserves that cover almost 6 million square kilometers.

Using satellite technology, Pristine Seas has tracked thousands of commercial fishing boats from more than 20 countries to calculate the profitability of commercial fishing.

Since 2009, the year Oracle started supporting Pristine Seas as a major donor, there has been real progress.

Oracle’s initiatives touch most if not all of the Sustainable Development Goals, but it is more engaged on some than others. Goals 7-12 are particularly core to the work that we do (both ourselves and enabling our customers) and goals 3-6 are a significant focus of our work as well. As a large user of energy goal 13 is also relevant for us.

We are also actively engaged on the other goals, for example Oracle Giving supports many organizations working on wildlife and ocean conservation and Oracle Volunteering does a lot of work around helping those in need, but not to the same extent.

Hyperconnected cities leverage new digital technologies to transform and interconnect critical elements of an urban ecosystem to unlock the greatest potential economic, business, and social benefits. To do this, cities are adopting an array of technologies, including public Wi-Fi, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud, and mobile technology, which are now used by more than 9 out of 10 cities in our study. Other commonly used technologies include biometrics (83% of cities), AI (82%), blockchain (66%), and telematics (52%).

By using these technologies in conjunction with wider and richer sets of data, cities are driving high performance across their urban ecosystems—from smart buildings and roads to smart energy grids and water systems, to smart mobility and transportation—and facilitating real-time interaction among residents, businesses, and government entities and services.

But hyperconnectivity is not just about technology adoption. These cities also excel at building trade linkages with other cities and countries as well as developing partnerships with business and academic communities. For example, 48% of cities we surveyed work with academic institutions to find smart city solutions.
